2018 Douglas Southall Freeman Award!

MAJOR AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT!

We at Savas Beatie are so pleased to share with you that our big book of 2018, "The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham, 1860-1861," edited by Janet E. Croon (Savas Beatie, 2018)...

is the 2018 Douglas Southall Freeman Award for best book on Southern history! This is one of the few "big" Civil War-related awards, and we are very proud of this accomplishment.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: "I can't tell you how thrilled and humbled I am about this great honor, and that the judges recognized the lasting importance of LeRoy's fascinating and heartbreaking story," explained editor Jan Croon. "When we began, Mr. Savas told me 'This is going to win an award, Jan. It is a very important book.' Ted was right."
LeRoy Gresham was born into a white slave-holding Macon, Georgia, family. His diary (started at 12) is the only one that covers secession through the entire Civil War. He died just after the Civil War ended. The genius teenager had a fatal disease (but did not know it), and he tracked its horrendous progress along with the rise and fall of the Old South. Meet his family, live with them and their slaves during the war, and experience the Civil War like you never have before.
