Aside from the Official Records volumes, these four volumes, totaling some 2,250 pages (!), are the most important primary source collection ever published on The Chancellorsville Campaign.

These two volumes complete The Chancellorsville Campaign Papers, the most extensive collection of primary source and first-hand accounts since the publication of the Official Records.

Volume 3 (Union) and Volume 4 (Confederate) contain published but hard to find accounts. They include a curated collection of newspaper editorials, reports, and memoirs, and postwar historical essays.

The newspaper accounts, 201 Union and 111 Confederate, are mostly contemporaneous. There are also 28 essays published in the Papers of the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United StatesSouthern Historical Society Papers, and Confederate Veteran.

The set includes a trenchant foreword by John Hennessy, former chief historian of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, which you can read HERE.

The Chancellorsville Campaign Papers will appear in two cycles, each of two volumes.
